Visit Buckingham Palace

A popular and exciting place for tourists across the world to come and visit is England. England has lush and beautiful countrysides, historic cities, and many other interesting places to visit. One famous landmark worth seeing is Hadrian’s Wall in the North East of England, which dates back to AD122. However, the first port of call for most tourists is London.

London is an amazing place to visit, either just for a weekend or longer. You would be surprised at how many people living in England have never visited London, especially when it is usually top of most visitors lists when they first visit England.

There are so many things to do and see in London it is impossible to list them all at once. Surprisingly one of the newest attractions in London also happens to be one of the most popular – The London Eye. Another popular attraction nearby to the London is the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. However, one place which must not be missed is Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace is England’s most famous Royal residence, being home to the Queen. The palace is positioned in the centre of London which makes it a natural focus for tourists. The daily pageant of ‘Changing of the Guard’ is fascinating to watch and quintessentially English.

The palace began its’ days as the city residence of the Duke of Buckingham. The Duke commissioned the building of the house in 1703. The house was later sold to King George III, who bought ‘Buckingham House’ for his wife, Queen Charlotte.

Since its construction, Buckingham House, as it was then known, has been enlarged considerably. The architects responsible for most of its additions were John Nash and Edward Blore. The largest of the additions to the house were the three wings formed around a central courtyard

The famous architect Aston Webb was responsible for the building of the principal facade of Buckingham Palace which he re-designed in 1912. Webb along with the sculptor Sir Thomas Brock were the winners of a competition to design a memorial to Queen Victoria. This memorial is still seen today.

The Queen has many other royal residences besides Buckingham Palace. Every year the Queen spends Christmas at Sandringham House in Norfolk. Sandringham House is one the Queen’s private royal residences, and Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland is another famous residence. The Queen was at Balmoral Castle when she heard the tragic news of the sad death of Princess Diana.
