The Job Situation For Teens Is Bleak
November 16, 2009 Filed Under: Finance
Finding jobs for everyone is difficult but teens have been especially hard hit. This summer, many found that finding someone who would hire them was next to impossible. Workers with little experience have little chance of being hired when matched up with people who have been in the workforce for years and are suddenly willing to accept lower paying jobs.
Teens often start looking for jobs when they reach the ages of 16 or 17 and they are willing to take minimum wage jobs. Part time jobs and hourly jobs are what they usually end up getting and it is a good way for them to get some much-needed experience as well as earn some spending money. Usually these jobs are open for them but this year has been different.
Many older workers have lost their jobs and have been faced with accepting a lesser paying job or have no job at all. This has meant that employers who would have normally been happy to hire teenagers during the summer are faced with having the ability to hire more experienced workers instead. In many cases, the more seasoned workers with families to feed have gotten the jobs.
Young teens are very Internet savvy and they know that looking for a job online is one of their best bets. The online job search sites have been inundated with people of all ages looking for work this year and there just arent enough jobs being posted to keep up with the demand. This dire work situation is taking place in other countries as well as the United States.
Any teenager hoping to find work now must be patient and persistent in their job search. Kids are back in school now so there is less competition among teens who can still hold down a part time job after work. The most important thing is to not give up and keep searching for that job because eventually something will open up.
