Unfortunately virtually all drivers will have a traffic accident at some point in their driving careers, and they will have to deal with all the stress and trauma that comes with it. On top of this comes the auto insurance claims process. Not exactly the most easy thing in the world to complete.
However, filing a car insurance claim does not have to be dreaded. There are some things you can do to make the job a lot easier. Here are just a few of them.
The best step you can take to make filing an auto insurance claim easier comes way before the accident. This is at the time of purchasing your policy. That step is to check the reputation of your prospective auto insurance company with regards to their claims record. One of the benefits of purchasing your car insurance online is the fact that you have the information about the company easily available. Check out the user reviews whilst paying special attention to how they rate the claims procedure.
Create an “accident kit” and place it somewhere in your car that is easy to get to. The kit should include a first aid box, a pen and paper to jot down details of the accident and a disposable camera to take pictures at the scene of the accident.
What do you do after an accident? Don’t Panic! You will be in a state of shock which is quite natural but resist the urge to run away. Not only is it illegal, but it virtually guarantees that you will fail in a claim.
Call an ambulance if someone is injured. Get a doctor to examine you and document your injuries in a medical report. And call the police! Contact your auto insurance company as soon as you can and file a claim.
You must keep a record of absolutely everything that happens when you make a claim. Get a box file for this purpose. It should contain all the information you gathered at the time of the accident, any correspondence relating to the accident, any bills or receipts relating to repair or medical bills and a personal log of all conversations you have with the auto insurance company.
The auto insurance claims process is probably the single most difficult thing to do after an accident, but by following the above steps you can ensure that you never have a difficult time dealing with your insurance company.
